CRISIS IN UNN

PG vs UNDER-G
(Pictures and videos included)

On Saturday 19th July, 2014, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka - the region called Franco specifically witnessed a very terrible unrest, according to eye witness report this is how it went down.

On Saturday night when the Franco gen was put on, the residents of Mbanefo Hall (a boys’ hostel in UNN) noticed they were disconnected from the gen light so the students there went to the gen house and disconnected the light from reaching other hostels too. When this happened the other boys in Eni-Njoku hall and Alvan Ikoku hall decided to go on a rally around Franco area alongside their brothers from Mbanefo, to express their unity and show that whatever happens to one affects all.

As this was going on, a group of boys entered into another hostel still in Franco area, Odili hall, which is mainly for Post Graduate (PG) students. As they entered with their rally and noise-making, but the PG students didn’t take it lightly with them, instead they caught one of the students and beat him up, unfortunately for the boy, his hand broke during the beating.

When this disturbing news reached the boys in the others hostels, they decided to retaliate with force by throwing stones at the glasses, lights and cars around the PG hostel. This continued and in the bid to defend themselves, the PG students also threw glasses and stones back which resulted in casualties as some boys were carried to the University’s Medical Centre that night.

With the aid of some officials who were on duty that night, the issue was temporarily settled and everyone went back to their hostels for the time being, everywhere was completely calm by 2am.

The next morning, the boys woke up early and took positions in front of the PG hall, not letting anyone out while they teased the PG students by using the PG tap showing them they couldn’t do anything; a lot of stoned where thrown that hit people and the glasses around.

As a plan to stop the increasing violence that Sunday morning, the police were called but that didn’t stop the students as they rushed at the police men like an angry mob and chased them away with sticks and stones. Later on, the army was called to settle the crisis, after a lot of chasing and shots fired, Franco area became quiet once again.

After the whole Franco area was finally calmed down, the hall governors of the hostels in Franco area and the Dean of Student affairs gathered the students around in Alvan Ikoku hall to address them; a lot of issues were addressed concerning the event that occurred and other things that concerned the students in the hostel as some students were allowed time to err their views.

I know violence isn’t the best answer but after this, most of the students in the hostel were surprisingly happy that it happened as it helped them tackle a lot of other issues that were disturbing them and they are sincerely hoping that the promises made will not be failed.
